FAQs

France Travel FAQs

Everything travellers usually ask us before booking a France holiday.

What is the best time to visit France?
April to June and September to October offer pleasant weather, manageable crowds and good prices. July and August are hot and busy, especially on the Riviera. Winter suits Paris, Christmas markets and the Alps.
How many days do I need in France?
Four to five days for Paris alone. Eight to ten days lets you add the Loire, Normandy or Provence. Two weeks allows Paris, Provence and the French Riviera at a comfortable pace.
Do I need a Schengen visa for France?
Travellers who are not EU or visa-exempt nationals, including Indian passport holders, generally need a Schengen visa applied for in advance, with proof of accommodation, insurance, funds and a return ticket. Apply well ahead in peak season; we can provide the supporting documentation.
Is France expensive?
Paris and the Riviera are pricey, but France rewards planning. Set lunch menus, bakeries and markets, regional trains and staying slightly outside the very centre bring costs down substantially.
What are the must-see places in France?
Paris (Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Notre-Dame, Montmartre, Versailles), Mont Saint-Michel, the Normandy D-Day beaches, the Loire chateaux, Provence and its lavender fields, Nice, Cannes and the Riviera, and the Alps.
How do I get around France?
The TGV high-speed network is excellent for city-to-city travel and is often faster than flying door-to-door. A hire car is best for Provence, the Loire, Normandy and Alsace, where the pleasure is in the villages between towns.
Do I need to speak French?
It helps, and a simple "bonjour" before speaking is genuinely important etiquette. English is widely understood in Paris, hotels and tourist areas, and our tours include English-speaking guides.
Should I pre-book the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre?
Yes, always. Timed tickets sell out in advance for both, as well as for Versailles and the Catacombs. Booking ahead saves hours of queuing, and our packages include skip-the-line entries where available.
Is Paris safe?
Paris is safe overall, but pickpocketing is common around the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, the Louvre and on the metro. Keep bags closed and in front of you, and ignore petition, bracelet and shell-game scams.
What is the food like and do I need reservations?
Superb, and regionally distinct. Reservations are advisable for dinner, essential for well-known restaurants, and lunch prix-fixe menus are the best value in the country. Vegetarian options are increasingly common but still limited in rural bistros.
What is the currency in France?
The euro (EUR). Cards, including contactless, are accepted almost universally. Carry a little cash for markets, small cafes and tips.
Is France good for families?
Yes. Disneyland Paris, Parc Asterix, the Cite des Sciences, chateaux, beaches and boat trips work brilliantly with children, and trains make travel easy.
Should I tip in France?
Service is included by law, so tipping is optional. Rounding up or leaving five to ten percent for good service in a restaurant is appreciated but not expected.
Can I do a day trip from Paris?
Easily. Versailles, Giverny, Reims and Champagne, the Loire chateaux, and even Mont Saint-Michel or the D-Day beaches are all doable as long day trips, and we can arrange them with a private guide.
Can you customise a France package?
Yes. Combine Paris with Provence, the Riviera, the Alps or Normandy, adjust hotel category and pace, and extend into Switzerland, Italy or Spain. Send us your dates and interests for a tailored quote.
