About the Trip
Trip Highlights
- The cherry blossom, or sakura, sweeping across Japan in spring is the magical heart of this journey. Each spring, in one of the world's great natural spectacles, Japan's cherry trees burst into a fleeting cloud of pink and white blossom, and the entire nation celebrates beneath them with hanami, or flower-viewing picnics, in a mood of joyful, poignant beauty. You witness the sakura at its peak in the finest settings, blossom-lined riverbanks and moats mirroring the flowers, temple and shrine gardens framed in pink, mountain valleys and city parks alive with petals drifting like snow.
- Tokyo's blossom-lined parks and riverbanks in spring are a beautiful and joyful highlight. In spring the great capital erupts in blossom, and you visit its finest hanami settings. Nearby you visit the UNESCO-listed village of Shirakawa-go, where steep-roofed thatched farmhouses in the distinctive gassho-zukuri style cluster amid rice paddies and mountains, an enchanting scene unchanged for centuries. You take in the crisp alpine air, the traditional crafts and the timeless rhythm of mountain life, a beautiful contrast to the great cities.
- Ancient Kyoto framed in cherry blossom is a captivating and romantic highlight of this journey. Kyoto, the serene heart of traditional Japan with its thousand temples and shrines, is perhaps the most beautiful place of all to see the sakura. You walk the Philosopher's Path, a canal-side lane canopied in cherry blossom, and admire the flowers framing the Golden Pavilion of Kinkaku-ji mirrored in its pond. Know when to go.
- Visa & entry: Many nationalities (including the UK, US, EU, Australia and Canada) can enter Japan visa-free for short tourist stays of up to 90 days; a passport valid for the duration of your stay is required. Requirements can change, so we confirm the exact, current process for your nationality before you travel and advise on any online arrival registration
- Currency: The currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY). Japan is still a surprisingly cash-based society, so carry yen for smaller restaurants, temples, markets and rural areas; cards are widely accepted in hotels, department stores and city restaurants, and convenience-store ATMs (7-Eleven, Japan Post) reliably accept foreign cards. IC cards such as Suica and Pasmo make trains and small purchases easy
- Best time to visit: Spring (late March to April) brings the famous cherry blossom (sakura) and mild days, while autumn (October to November) brings spectacular red and gold foliage and crisp, clear weather; both are peak seasons. Summer (June to August) is hot and humid with a June rainy season, and winter is cold but ideal for snow, onsen and fewer crowds. We advise on timing for blossom, foliage and festivals
- Language & etiquette: Japanese is the language, and while English signage is common on trains and in cities, English is less widely spoken, so our guides bridge the gap. Etiquette matters and is easy to respect: bow in greeting, remove your shoes where indicated, be quiet on trains, do not tip (it is not customary), and handle chopsticks politely. Politeness, cleanliness and order are deeply valued
- Getting around: Japan's rail network is superb, and the shinkansen (bullet train) whisks you between cities at up to 320 km/h in comfort and punctuality; a Japan Rail Pass or reserved tickets are included as per your itinerary. Cities have excellent metro and bus networks, and we arrange private transfers, guides and luggage forwarding (takkyubin) to keep travel smooth and effortless
- Health & safety: Japan is one of the safest, cleanest and most orderly countries in the world, with very low crime and excellent healthcare; tap water is safe to drink. No special vaccinations are required for a standard visit. We monitor conditions, including seasonal typhoons in late summer, and follow official guidance so your journey is smooth, safe and reassuring throughout
- Culture & customs: Japan blends the ultra-modern with the deeply traditional, from neon cities and bullet trains to ancient temples, tea ceremonies and ryokan inns. Onsen (hot spring) bathing is done nude after a thorough wash, in gender-separated baths; visible tattoos are restricted at some baths, and we advise on tattoo-friendly options. Slippers, tatami etiquette and quiet respect at shrines are all easy to master with our guidance
- Power & connectivity: Power is 100V with type A/B (US-style) two-flat-pin plugs, so bring an adapter and check dual-voltage appliances. Connectivity is excellent; we can arrange a pocket wifi device or travel eSIM so you stay connected and navigate easily. Convenience stores (konbini) are everywhere for cash, snacks, tickets and essentials, and are a genuine and beloved part of the Japan experience
Frequently Asked Questions
When exactly does the cherry blossom bloom?
The sakura typically peaks in Tokyo and Kyoto from late March to early April, a little later in the mountains and north, though the exact timing shifts each year with the weather and can only be forecast in the weeks beforehand. The blossom lasts barely a week or two, so we time this journey for the statistical peak and, because the bloom moves across the country, our route from Tokyo through the Alps to Kyoto maximises your chances of catching it at its glorious best.
What if the blossom is early or late?
Nature always has the final say, but our route is designed to hedge against it. Because the sakura opens at different times in different places and elevations, travelling between Tokyo, the mountains and Kyoto greatly increases your chances of catching peak bloom somewhere along the way. We monitor the forecasts closely and can fine-tune the pace and stops, and even in a slightly off year, Japan in spring is beautiful, with blossom, fresh green mountains and mild, lovely weather.
What meals are included?
Daily breakfast is included, along with any meals named in the itinerary, which typically includes special dinners such as a multi-course kaiseki feast at a ryokan inn, and welcome dinners. Japanese cuisine is one of the world's great pleasures, from sushi, ramen, tempura and yakitori to regional specialities and refined kaiseki, and we usually leave lunches and many dinners free so you can explore, recommending the finest restaurants, izakaya and street-food spots at every stage of your journey.
Are the tours private or in a group?
Your journey is private by default, with your own expert English-speaking local guides and reserved rail travel, giving you flexibility, depth and a pace tailored to you; small-group departures can be arranged if you prefer. Japan's knowledgeable guides bring the temples, shrines, gardens, cuisine and rich culture vividly to life, navigate the language and etiquette, and greatly enrich every visit, while the superb rail network makes independent time between cities easy and rewarding.
Do I need a visa for Japan?
Many nationalities, including the UK, US, EU, Australia and Canada, can visit Japan visa-free for short tourist stays of up to 90 days, needing only a passport valid for the length of the visit. We confirm the exact, current requirements for your nationality, advise on any online arrival or customs registration, and ensure your entry is smooth. Requirements can change, so we always verify the latest rules before you travel.
Is Japan safe to visit?
Japan is one of the safest, cleanest and most orderly countries in the world, with very low crime rates, superb infrastructure and excellent healthcare, and travel here is exceptionally smooth and reassuring. Tap water is safe and the trains run to the minute. We continuously monitor conditions, including seasonal typhoons in late summer, use trusted local guides, and follow official guidance, so you can relax and enjoy the extraordinary beauty and culture of Japan.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (late March to April) brings the famous cherry blossom and mild days, and autumn (October to November) brings spectacular red and gold foliage and crisp, clear weather; both are peak, popular seasons. Summer is hot, humid and lively with festivals, and winter offers snow, onsen and fewer crowds. We advise on the ideal timing for blossom, foliage, festivals and your interests, and tailor the route to the season.
Can the itinerary be customised?
Absolutely. We can adjust the balance of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and beyond, add nights at a luxurious ryokan with private onsen, include Hiroshima and Miyajima, the Japanese Alps, Nara, Mount Fuji and Hakone or the tropical south, time your visit for cherry blossom or autumn colour, and tailor the pace, comfort and focus to you. Every itinerary is a flexible starting point for your ideal journey through beautiful Japan.
