About the Trip

This fifteen-day grand journey is the ultimate Tanzanian adventure, combining the country's three greatest experiences into one epic, once-in-a-lifetime trip: summiting Africa's highest mountain, safariing its greatest parks, and unwinding on its most beautiful island. You begin by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro by the classic Marangu route, trekking through rainforest and moorland to the alpine hut camps and, on a starlit summit night, up to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the Roof of Africa. After celebrating your descent, you set off on safari across the legendary northern circuit, the baobabs and elephants of Tarangire, the endless big-cat plains of the Serengeti and, in season, the Great Migration, and the wildlife-filled Ngorongoro Crater with its Big Five. Finally you fly to Zanzibar to rest and reward yourself on powder-white beaches, exploring historic Stone Town and fragrant spice farms. Expertly guided throughout, this is the grandest of Tanzanian journeys, mountain, plains and ocean, adventure and bliss, in one unforgettable expedition.
Highlights

Trip Highlights

  • Standing on Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa, is the triumphant opening highlight of this grand journey. Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 metres the highest mountain in Africa, is one of the world's great trekking prizes, and reaching its summit is a life-changing achievement. Climbing by the classic Marangu route, with its comfortable mountain huts, you trek through lush rainforest and open moorland to the high alpine camps, then, on a cold, starlit summit night, climb slowly by headlamp to Gilman's Point on the crater rim and along to Uhuru Peak, arriving as the sun rises over a sea of cloud, flooding the ancient glaciers with golden light.
  • The endless golden plains of the Serengeti, alive with big cats, are a spectacular highlight of this journey. The Serengeti, a vast ocean of golden grassland dotted with acacias and dramatic granite kopjes, offers some of the finest big-cat viewing on earth. On unhurried game drives you seek out powerful lion prides, cheetahs hunting across the open plains, and leopards draped in the riverine trees, alongside elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and immense herds of plains game, and in season the vast columns of the Great Migration streaming across the savannah. Your expert guide brings the ecosystem vividly to life.
  • The wildlife-filled Ngorongoro Crater, a natural amphitheatre of the Big Five, is an unforgettable highlight. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, a vast, unbroken bowl some twenty kilometres across, its walls rising six hundred metres above a floor of grassland, swamp, soda lake and forest. Within this natural amphitheatre lives one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, and descending into it feels like entering a lost world. Here you can see all of the Big Five in a single day, with an excellent chance of the endangered black rhino, alongside great lion prides.
  • The baobabs and elephant herds of Tarangire add magnificent variety to the safari. Tarangire National Park, a rolling landscape of golden grassland studded with ancient, swollen baobab trees and threaded by the Tarangire River, is one of the most atmospheric parks in Africa. In the dry season it draws some of the largest elephant herds in Tanzania, and you watch great families move across the plains, dig for water in the riverbed and shelter beneath the enormous baobabs, alongside lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and over five hundred species of birds. The combination of primeval baobabs, big herds and golden light is unforgettable.
  • Beach bliss on Zanzibar is the perfect, well-earned finale to this epic journey. After the exertion of Kilimanjaro and the thrill of safari, Zanzibar offers a blissful reward: powder-white beaches lapped by warm turquoise water, historic Stone Town with its Swahili-Arab heritage, and fragrant spice farms. You unwind on soft white sand beneath leaning palms, swim in the clear sea, snorkel over vibrant reefs, wander the coral-stone lanes of Stone Town past carved doors and bustling bazaars, tour a spice farm rich with clove, vanilla and cinnamon, and watch spectacular sunsets over the Indian Ocean. The rest, warmth and beauty are the perfect close.
  • Above all, this is the grandest of Tanzanian journeys, mountain, plains and ocean in one epic expedition. This fifteen-day journey combines Tanzania's three greatest experiences into one once-in-a-lifetime adventure. You climb Kilimanjaro to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa; you safari across the baobabs of Tarangire, the endless plains of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, seeing the Big Five and, in season, the Great Migration; and you unwind on the powder-white beaches of Zanzibar amid Swahili heritage and fragrant spice. Expertly guided throughout, encompassing the summit of the continent, the greatest wildlife on earth and one of the Indian Ocean's most beautiful islands.
Itinerary

Day by Day

A detailed day-by-day plan for this 15-day journey.

Day 1

Your grand Tanzanian journey begins as your flight arrives at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you are met and transferred to your lodge in or near Arusha, at the foot of the northern mountains, with Kilimanjaro itself perhaps visible above the plains, a stirring first sight of the challenge ahead. Spend the rest of the day resting after your journey and preparing for the climb. This evening your lead mountain guide holds a detailed briefing, checking your gear, explaining the Marangu route and the vital importance of acclimatisation and hydration, and answering your questions, so you set out fully prepared. A comfortable night's sleep is precious before the mountain, and the anticipation of the epic weeks ahead, summit, safari and sea, begins to build. As you settle in, the adventure feels wonderfully real. Rest well, ready to begin your climb up Kilimanjaro tomorrow.

Day 2

After breakfast you drive to the Marangu Gate on the lush south-eastern flank of Kilimanjaro, where you complete park formalities and meet your crew of guides, cook and porters. Then the trek begins, following a good forest path that climbs steadily through beautiful, dripping montane rainforest, alive with birdsong, moss-draped trees and, if you are lucky, blue monkeys in the canopy. Your guide sets the crucial slow pace, pole pole, to aid acclimatisation, and you pause to take in the lush forest and, in clearings, glimpses of the peaks above. After around three to five hours you reach the Mandara Hut at about 2,700 metres, a group of comfortable A-frame huts in a forest clearing, where a hot meal awaits. A short acclimatisation stroll to the nearby Maundi Crater rewards you with fine views. As night falls in the forest, you rest. Rest well at your first mountain camp on Kilimanjaro.

Day 3

Today you climb out of the forest and onto the open moorland, with grander and grander views as you gain height. The path leaves the last trees behind and ascends across heath and moorland studded with giant heathers, lobelias and groundsels, the strange and beautiful high-altitude plants of Kilimanjaro, with the twin peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi coming into view ahead. Your guide keeps the pace slow and steady to help your body adjust to the thinning air, and you pause to rest, drink and take in the expanding views over the moorland and the plains far below. After around five to seven hours you reach the Horombo Hut at about 3,720 metres, a larger cluster of huts on an exposed ridge with spectacular views and often a sea of cloud below. As the cold, clear night falls, the stars are brilliant. Rest well at Horombo, high on the mountain.

Day 4

Today you climb into the high-alpine desert of the saddle, the barren, lunar expanse between the two peaks, on the way to the final base before the summit. Leaving Horombo, you ascend past the last water point and the strange giant groundsels into an increasingly stark, stony landscape, the air noticeably thinner and the summit cone of Kibo looming ahead with its glaciers. You cross the wide, windswept saddle, pacing yourself carefully, with the jagged peak of Mawenzi behind you. After around five to seven hours you reach the Kibo Hut at about 4,700 metres, a stone hut at the foot of the final climb, stark and cold. You arrive in the afternoon, eat an early meal, and rest and sleep as much as you can, for you will rise around midnight for the summit attempt. Your guide checks your condition and briefs you carefully. As darkness and cold settle, you gather your resolve. Rest well and store your strength for the summit of Kilimanjaro.

Day 5

You rise around midnight for the summit climb, the hardest and most magnificent part of the trek. By the light of your headlamp, in bitter cold and beneath a canopy of stars, you climb slowly, pole pole, up the steep scree towards the crater rim, your guides setting the pace and encouraging you through the long, dark hours. As dawn approaches you reach Gilman's Point on the rim, then continue around the crater edge, past the great glaciers, to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the Roof of Africa, as the sun rises over a sea of cloud. After triumphant photos at the summit sign you begin the long descent, dropping back to Kibo for a short rest and meal, then continuing down across the saddle to the Horombo Hut. Exhausted and elated, you celebrate your achievement with your crew. As the stars come out over the moorland, you savour your triumph. Rest well at Horombo after summiting Kilimanjaro.

Day 6

After a well-earned breakfast and a celebration with your crew, who often send you off with the famous Kilimanjaro song, you make the final descent, dropping back through the moorland and the lush montane rainforest to the Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate, a treasured memento of your achievement. You then transfer westwards towards the safari country, arriving at your lodge or camp near Tarangire National Park in time to rest, shower and savour your triumph, the mountain behind you and the plains ahead. The change from alpine heights to the warm savannah is wonderful, and you feel the anticipation of safari begin to build. This evening, enjoy a relaxed dinner and a comfortable bed, your legs weary but your spirits soaring after standing on the Roof of Africa. Rest well near Tarangire, ready to begin your safari tomorrow.

Good to Know
  • Visa & entry: Most visitors need a visa for Tanzania, which can be obtained as an eVisa online before travel or, for many nationalities, on arrival at the main airports; a passport valid for at least six months with blank pages is required. Requirements can change, so we confirm the exact current process for your nationality and help you secure the eVisa in good time
  • Currency: The currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS); US dollars are widely accepted at lodges, camps and for park fees (bring notes issued after 2009), and cards work at hotels and larger establishments in Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, but carry cash for tips, curios and remote areas. ATMs are common in towns but scarce on safari
  • Best time to visit: The long dry season from late June to October is superb for wildlife and for the Serengeti river crossings, while the calving season of the southern Serengeti in January and February is spectacular; the long rains fall roughly March to May and short rains in November, when the parks are green, lush and quieter with fewer visitors and lower prices
  • Language & etiquette: Swahili and English are the official languages, and English is widely spoken in tourism, making travel easy; a friendly Jambo goes a long way. Ask permission before photographing people, especially Maasai communities, dress modestly in towns and, particularly, on the Muslim island of Zanzibar, and respect local customs everywhere
  • Getting around: Safaris are by custom 4x4 vehicle with a pop-up roof and expert driver-guide, with some long but scenic drives on the northern circuit; light-aircraft flights link the Serengeti, the southern parks, Zanzibar and the coast quickly and comfortably on fly-in itineraries. Roads can be rough and dusty in the parks, so bring a light scarf and a small daypack
  • Health & safety: A yellow fever certificate is required if you are arriving from or transiting an endemic country; malaria prophylaxis is recommended for most safari and coastal areas, so consult a travel clinic well before departure, and bring insect repellent, sun protection and personal medication. Tanzania is a rewarding, well-established safari destination, and we use trusted guides and follow official guidance
  • Culture & tipping: Tanzania is a warm, diverse country of many peoples, from the Maasai of the northern plains to the Swahili culture of Zanzibar; a village or community visit is a genuine highlight. Tipping is customary and appreciated, for driver-guides, camp and lodge staff, porters and mountain crews, and we advise on suggested amounts. Photography of airports and official buildings is best avoided
  • Power & practicalities: Power is 240V with UK-style type G three-pin plugs (type D is also found), so bring an adapter; camps and lodges often run on generators or solar with limited hours and charging points, so a power bank is useful. Pack neutral-coloured, lightweight clothing, warm layers for cool early game drives and the crater rim, a hat, binoculars and a good camera with a zoom lens
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it realistic to climb Kilimanjaro and then go on safari and to the beach?

Yes; this grand itinerary is carefully sequenced to make it not only realistic but wonderful. You climb Kilimanjaro first, while fresh, by the comfortable Marangu route, then transition to the relaxed pace of safari, where you are driven and pampered, and finish with pure rest on the beaches of Zanzibar, the perfect reward for tired legs. The change of pace and scenery, from mountain to plains to ocean, is invigorating. We build in comfortable lodges and recovery time, and can adjust the trek route, safari length and beach stay to suit your fitness and preferences.

How fit do I need to be for the Kilimanjaro section?

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a challenging high-altitude trek requiring good general fitness, stamina and determination, but no technical mountaineering skills, it is a walk rather than a climb. The main challenge is the altitude, so going slowly (pole pole), staying well hydrated and following your expert guides are key. The Marangu route offers hut accommodation and a steady profile; adding an acclimatisation night at Horombo further improves success and can be arranged. We advise on training beforehand, and if you prefer not to climb, we can replace the Kilimanjaro section with more safari or beach time.

What meals are included?

Meals as specified in each itinerary are included; on safari, most lodges and camps operate on a full-board basis, so breakfast, lunch and dinner are typically included while you are in the parks and reserves, along with bottled water in the vehicle. In Arusha, Dar es Salaam and on Zanzibar, breakfast is usually included and other meals may be free for you to explore. Tanzanian cuisine is hearty and varied, from nyama choma (grilled meat) and ugali to fragrant Swahili coast seafood, coconut curries and tropical fruit, and we detail exactly what is included at each stage.

Are the tours private or in a group?

Your safari is private by default, with your own expert English-speaking driver-guide and custom 4x4 vehicle with a pop-up roof, giving you flexibility, unhurried game viewing and a pace tailored to you; small-group and fly-in options can be arranged if you prefer. Tanzania's knowledgeable guides are superb at finding and interpreting wildlife, from the big cats of the Serengeti to the elephants of Tarangire, and greatly enrich every game drive, cultural visit and journey through this beautiful country.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most visitors need a visa, which can be obtained as an eVisa online before travel or, for many nationalities, on arrival at the main airports, and a passport valid for at least six months with blank pages is required. We confirm the exact, current requirements for your nationality, advise on the best approach, and help you secure the eVisa in good time so your entry is smooth and stress-free.

Is Tanzania safe to visit?

Tanzania is one of Africa's most established and rewarding safari destinations, welcoming visitors for decades, and travel on a well-planned itinerary is smooth and rewarding. We use trusted lodges, camps, guides and drivers, and follow official guidance at all times, taking sensible precautions in cities as anywhere. On safari, on Kilimanjaro and on Zanzibar you are in expert, experienced hands, and the warmth of the Tanzanian welcome is one of the great joys of a visit.

When is the best time to visit?

The long dry season from late June to October is superb for wildlife and for the Serengeti river crossings, while the calving season in the southern Serengeti in January and February is spectacular for predators and newborns. The green seasons of the long rains (roughly March to May) and short rains (November) bring lush landscapes, wonderful birdlife and fewer visitors at lower prices. We advise on the best timing for your interests, whether the migration, big cats, birds, Kilimanjaro or the beaches of Zanzibar.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. We can adjust the balance of parks and reserves, add the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the southern Ruaha and Nyerere or a Kilimanjaro trek, combine safari with the beaches of Zanzibar or Mafia Island, switch between driving and fly-in safaris, and tailor the standard of camps and lodges from classic to ultra-luxury. Every itinerary is a flexible starting point that we shape around your interests, pace, budget and dream journey through beautiful Tanzania.
