About the Trip

Uganda, warmly known as the Pearl of Africa, packs an astonishing variety of wildlife and landscapes into one green and welcoming country, and this ten-day journey takes in the very best of it. You come face to face with a family of mountain gorillas in the ancient, misty rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to almost half the world's remaining mountain gorillas; you track wild chimpanzees through the fruiting forest of Kibale; you cruise the Kazinga Channel and search for the famous tree-climbing lions in the savanna of Queen Elizabeth National Park; and you enjoy a gentle finale of walking safaris and boat trips among zebra and giraffe at Lake Mburo. Guided throughout by an expert driver-guide and warmed by the genuine friendliness of the Ugandan people, this is a spectacular, wonderfully varied introduction to a country that offers gorillas, chimps and a classic Big Game safari all in one unforgettable trip.
Highlights

Trip Highlights

  • Coming face to face with a family of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the magical heart of this journey. Bwindi is a vast, ancient rainforest draped over steep, misty mountains in Uganda's far southwest, and it shelters almost half of all the mountain gorillas left on Earth. After an early briefing, you set off with a ranger and trackers into the dense, dripping forest, climbing tangled slopes until you reach a habituated gorilla family. Then comes a breathless, closely regulated hour in their presence, watching a silverback rest, mothers cradle infants and youngsters tumble and play just metres away.
  • Tracking wild chimpanzees through the fruiting forest of Kibale National Park is a thrilling highlight of this journey. Kibale protects one of the richest concentrations of primates in Africa and offers the country's finest chimpanzee tracking, with large, well-studied communities roaming its tall, green forest. Setting out with an expert ranger, you follow the hoots, screams and drumming of the chimps through the trees, tracing them until you find a group feeding, grooming, resting or swinging noisily through the canopy overhead. Watching these charismatic, intelligent and endlessly expressive great apes at close range, in their wild forest home, is exhilarating and unforgettable.
  • Cruising the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park, past hippos, elephants and thousands of birds, is a wonderful highlight. The Kazinga Channel is a broad, natural waterway linking Lake Edward and Lake George, and its shores host one of the greatest concentrations of hippos and water birds in Africa. From a comfortable boat you glide slowly along the banks, watching huge pods of hippo wallow and yawn, buffalo and elephant come down to drink, Nile crocodiles bask, and a spectacular parade of birds, from fish eagles and pelicans to kingfishers, storks and skimmers, line the water. The light, wildlife and sense of abundance are magical.
  • Searching for the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, draped in fig trees, is an unforgettable highlight. In the remote, southern Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, the lions have a celebrated and unusual habit of lounging high in the branches of giant fig and acacia trees, a behaviour seen in only a handful of places in the world. You drive slowly through the beautiful, open savanna, scanning the great trees until, if fortune smiles, you spot paws, tails and tawny bodies draped languidly along the boughs above you. Alongside the lions, the plains here hold elephant, buffalo, Uganda kob and abundant birdlife.
  • A gentle finale of walking safaris and boat trips at Lake Mburo adds beauty and variety to this journey. Compact, scenic Lake Mburo National Park, set amid rolling acacia savanna and shining lakes on the way back towards Entebbe, offers a wonderfully relaxed change of pace. Because there are no elephants or lions here, you can explore on foot with an armed ranger, walking among zebra, impala, topi and eland, and you can take a boat trip on the lake, gliding past hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds with the chance of spotting the shy sitatunga antelope. Night drives here also offer the chance of leopard and bushbabies.
  • Above all, this journey offers the astonishing variety of Uganda, gorillas, chimps and a Big Game safari, in one unforgettable trip. Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, is one of the most biodiverse and welcoming countries on the continent, and few places let you combine so many world-class wildlife experiences in a single journey. Over ten days you meet mountain gorillas in Bwindi, track chimpanzees in Kibale, cruise the Kazinga Channel and search for tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth, and enjoy walking safaris at Lake Mburo, guided throughout by an expert driver-guide and warmed by the genuine friendliness of the Ugandan people.

Good to Know
  • Visa & entry: Most nationalities need a visa for Uganda, easily obtained as an eVisa online before travel; an East Africa Tourist Visa is also available if you are combining Uganda with Kenya and Rwanda. A passport valid for at least six months with blank pages is required, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry. We confirm the exact process for your nationality and help arrange the eVisa where needed
  • Currency: The currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX); US dollars are widely accepted for tourism, park fees and tips (bring clean, newer notes dated 2013 or later). Cards are accepted in Kampala, Entebbe and larger lodges, but carry cash for markets, craft stalls, tips and rural areas. ATMs are available in Kampala, Entebbe and major towns
  • Best time to visit: Uganda is a year-round destination, but the two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, are ideal for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking and game drives, with easier forest trails and better wildlife viewing. The wetter months (March to May and October to November) are lush, green and quieter, with fruiting forests that can bring primates lower and closer
  • Language & etiquette: English is the official language and is widely spoken, alongside Luganda, Swahili and many local languages; a few words of greeting are always warmly received. Ugandans are famously friendly, warm and welcoming. Dress is casual but modest, especially in villages and towns, and it is polite to ask before photographing people
  • Getting around: Touring is by private 4x4 safari vehicle with your own expert driver-guide, with some long but scenic drives on a mix of tarmac and rougher park roads; scenic domestic light-aircraft flights to airstrips near Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls can shorten long transfers and are easily arranged. Roads can be slow, so we plan realistic days
  • Health & trekking: A yellow fever certificate is required, and antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended, as is comprehensive travel insurance. Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking involve hiking on steep, sometimes muddy forest trails at altitude, so reasonable fitness, sturdy waterproof boots, gaiters, a rain jacket and gardening-style gloves are advised. Porters are available and warmly recommended to support local communities
  • Permits & wildlife rules: Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking require permits that are strictly limited and must be booked well in advance; we secure these for you as part of your journey. On a trek you spend a magical, closely regulated hour with the primates, keeping a respectful distance, wearing a mask where required, and following your ranger's guidance at all times. There is a minimum age of 15 for gorilla trekking
  • Safety & power: Uganda, the warm and welcoming Pearl of Africa, is a rewarding and generally safe destination for travellers, and we use trusted guides and lodges and follow official guidance at all times. Power is 240V with UK-style type G three-pin plugs, so bring an adapter; lodges in remote areas may run on generators or solar with limited charging hours, so a power bank is useful
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I definitely see gorillas and chimpanzees?

Sightings are never absolutely guaranteed in the wild, but success rates in Bwindi and Kibale are exceptionally high, well above ninety percent, because expert trackers monitor the habituated gorilla and chimpanzee groups daily and guide you to them. On a gorilla trek you spend a magical, closely regulated hour with the family once found, and chimp tracking similarly aims for time with a habituated community. Treks vary in length and difficulty depending on where the primates have moved, so a good level of fitness helps.

How fit do I need to be for the gorilla trek?

A reasonable level of fitness is important. Bwindi's forest is steep, dense and often muddy, and treks can range from an hour or two to a full, strenuous day of hiking at altitude, depending on where the gorillas are. You go at your own pace with a ranger, and hiring a porter is warmly recommended, both to help you over the tough sections and to support the local community. Sturdy waterproof boots, gaiters, a rain jacket, gloves and plenty of water make all the difference. We tailor the pace to you.

What meals are included?

Daily breakfast is included, along with any meals named in the itinerary; at remote safari lodges and forest camps most stays are full board, so lunches and dinners are typically included there, while in Entebbe, Kampala and towns we often leave some meals free for you to explore. Ugandan food is fresh and hearty, from grilled tilapia and Nile perch to matoke, groundnut stews, tropical fruit and excellent local coffee, and we recommend the best places to eat at every stage.

Are the tours private or in a group?

Your journey is private by default, with your own expert English-speaking driver-guide and private 4x4 safari vehicle, giving you flexibility, depth and a pace tailored to you; small-group and lodge-based options can be arranged if you prefer. Uganda's knowledgeable guides and forest rangers bring the gorillas, chimpanzees, savanna wildlife, birds and rich culture vividly to life, and the private vehicle means you can linger at every sighting.

Do I need a visa for Uganda?

Most nationalities need a visa, easily obtained as an eVisa online before travel, while an East Africa Tourist Visa is available if you are combining Uganda with Kenya and Rwanda. We confirm the exact, current requirements for your nationality, advise on the best option, and help arrange the eVisa where needed. A passport valid for at least six months and a yellow fever vaccination certificate are required for entry.

Is Uganda safe to visit?

Uganda, warmly known as the Pearl of Africa, is a friendly and generally safe destination for travellers, renowned for the warmth and hospitality of its people, and travel here is rewarding and smooth. We continuously monitor conditions, use trusted local guides, rangers and lodges, and follow official guidance at all times. As anywhere, we advise sensible precautions with valuables, and your driver-guide is with you throughout to ensure a safe and relaxed journey.

When is the best time to visit?

Uganda is a year-round destination, but the two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, are generally best for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking and game drives, with easier forest trails. The wetter months are lush, green, quieter and beautiful, and fruiting forests can bring primates closer, so they have their own rewards. We advise on the best timing for your interests, whether primates, big game, birding or scenery.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. We can adjust the balance of gorillas, chimpanzees, savanna safari, the Nile, mountains and lakes, add nights at Bwindi, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Lake Bunyonyi or Jinja, include a second gorilla trek or a Rwenzori climb, extend with Rwanda or Kenya, and tailor the pace, comfort and focus to you. Every itinerary is a flexible starting point for your ideal journey through the Pearl of Africa.
