Good to Know
  • Visa & entry: All nationalities receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival in the Maldives with a passport valid for at least six months, a confirmed hotel booking and onward travel; no advance visa is needed. Requirements can change, so we confirm the current details before travel
  • Currency: The US dollar is widely used and accepted at resorts (the local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa); resorts bill in dollars and cards are widely accepted. Carry some cash for tips and local-island purchases; almost everything at resorts is charged to your room
  • Best time to visit: The dry season (roughly November to April) offers the sunniest, calmest weather, ideal for beaches and diving; the wet season (May to October) is greener and quieter with occasional rain and better manta and whale-shark plankton, and remains warm year-round
  • Resorts & local islands: Most resorts occupy their own private island, where relaxed swimwear is fine; on inhabited local islands, Maldivian culture is Islamic and conservative, so modest dress is required except on designated 'bikini beaches'. We advise on etiquette for local-island visits and stays
  • Transfers: Resorts are reached by speedboat (nearer Male) or scenic seaplane (farther atolls); seaplanes operate in daylight only, so we plan flight and transfer timings carefully. Transfer type and cost vary by resort, and we arrange everything, including any overnight near the airport if needed
  • Alcohol & etiquette: Alcohol is served only at resorts and on liveaboards, not on inhabited local islands or brought into the country; this is strictly enforced. Maldivians are warm and welcoming; respecting local customs, especially on inhabited islands and during Ramadan, is appreciated
  • Marine life & reefs: The Maldives has spectacular coral reefs and marine life; please use reef-safe sunscreen, never touch or stand on coral, and follow guides' advice when snorkelling or diving with mantas, whale sharks and turtles. Strong sun and currents mean care, hydration and sun protection are important
  • Getting around & power: Within the Maldives, travel is by boat and seaplane, all arranged; there are no roads between islands. Power is 230V with UK-style type G (and some type D) plugs, so bring an adapter. Dhivehi is the language, and English is widely spoken at resorts and in tourism
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What level of surfer is the Maldives suitable for?

The Maldives has breaks for a range of abilities, from more forgiving, longer waves for improving intermediates to punchier reef breaks for the experienced. Most are reef breaks, best suited to surfers comfortable riding over reef, and our expert local guides match the break to your ability and the conditions, and look after your safety. Reef booties are recommended. Let us know your experience so we can base you at the best spot and guide you to suitable waves.

When is the best time to surf in the Maldives, and resort or charter?

The Maldives surf season runs roughly from March to October, with the biggest, most consistent swells around June to September. You can surf from a surf-friendly resort (with boat access to breaks) or on a surf charter boat (a liveaboard that follows the best waves), each with advantages; charters access more breaks and chase swell, while resorts offer more comfort and family-friendliness. We advise on the best timing, region and option for your surfing and group, and tailor accordingly.

What meals are included?

This depends on the resort and the board basis chosen: bed and breakfast, half board, full board or all-inclusive, which we tailor to you. Many Maldives resorts offer all-inclusive or half-board packages ideal for their island setting, given dining is on the resort island. The Maldives offers superb dining, from fresh seafood and international cuisine to romantic beach and underwater restaurants, and we advise on the best board basis and dining for each resort.

How do I get to my resort?

Resorts are reached from Male's international airport by speedboat (for nearer resorts, around 20 to 90 minutes) or by scenic seaplane (for farther atolls, a spectacular flight over turquoise lagoons), depending on the resort's location; some also use domestic flights plus speedboat. We arrange all transfers and plan timings carefully, as seaplanes fly in daylight only, occasionally with an overnight near the airport for late arrivals.

Do I need a visa for the Maldives?

No advance visa is needed: all nationalities receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival with a passport valid for at least six months, a confirmed booking and onward travel. It is one of the easiest destinations to enter. We confirm the current requirements before travel, so arrival is smooth and you can head straight to your island paradise.

Is the Maldives good for non-divers?

Wonderfully so. Even snorkellers enjoy world-class reefs, often straight off the beach or from an overwater villa, teeming with colourful fish, turtles, rays and reefs, and many resorts have superb house reefs. There are also dolphin cruises, sandbank picnics, sunset fishing, spas, water sports and blissful relaxation. Divers enjoy some of the world's finest diving, but the Maldives is magical for everyone, whether or not you dive.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry season, roughly November to April, offers the sunniest, calmest weather, ideal for beaches, snorkelling and diving. The wet season, May to October, is greener and quieter, with occasional rain but warm seas and superb plankton-driven manta and whale-shark encounters. It is warm year-round. We advise on the best timing for your interests, whether sun, diving or marine wildlife.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. We can choose the ideal resort or resorts for your style and budget, from romantic overwater villas to family or diving resorts, arrange multi-island or local-island combinations, liveaboard cruises, and add experiences from spa retreats to whale-shark safaris and surfing. Every Maldives holiday is tailored to you, and we match the resort, board basis, transfers and experiences to create your ideal island escape.
