About the Trip

For the mountain lover and the adventurer, this nine-day journey combines two of Uganda's most thrilling wild experiences, trekking the mist-wrapped, glacier-capped Rwenzori Mountains, the fabled Mountains of the Moon, and meeting mountain gorillas and rare golden monkeys in the volcanic Virungas of Mgahinga. You spend several days hiking through the surreal, otherworldly landscapes of the Rwenzori, Africa's highest mountain range outside Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, climbing through dripping montane forest and eerie bamboo into a bizarre world of giant lobelias, groundsels and glaciers on the equator. Then you journey to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the far southwest, set among three dramatic volcanoes shared with Rwanda and Congo, to trek to a habituated gorilla family and to track the rare, beautiful golden monkeys through the bamboo. Guided by expert mountain crews and trackers and warmed by Ugandan hospitality, this is a rugged, spectacular and deeply rewarding high-country adventure through the wild highlands of the Pearl of Africa.
Highlights

Trip Highlights

  • Trekking the glacier-capped Rwenzori Mountains, the fabled Mountains of the Moon, is the epic heart of this adventure. The Rwenzori range, rising to snow and glaciers almost on the equator, is one of the most extraordinary and least-visited mountain landscapes on Earth, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of mist, moss, waterfalls and surreal vegetation. Over several days you hike from steamy montane forest up through eerie zones of bamboo and heather into a bizarre, dreamlike world of giant lobelias and groundsels, boggy valleys and glacier-hung peaks, sleeping in mountain huts and waking to breathtaking views. It is challenging, remote and utterly unforgettable, a true expedition.
  • Meeting mountain gorillas in the volcanic Virungas at Mgahinga is a profound highlight of this adventure. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, set dramatically among three great volcanoes in the far southwest where Uganda meets Rwanda and Congo, offers a wilder, quieter gorilla experience than better-known Bwindi. Trekking through bamboo and montane forest on the slopes of the Virungas with a ranger and trackers, you reach a habituated gorilla family and spend a breathless, closely regulated hour in their presence, watching a mighty silverback, gentle mothers with infants and playful youngsters, all framed by the dramatic volcanic peaks. The remoteness and beauty make it especially moving.
  • Tracking the rare, beautiful golden monkeys through the Virunga bamboo is a delightful highlight of this journey. The golden monkey, a strikingly beautiful primate with a coat of gold, orange and black, is found only in the high bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes, and Mgahinga is one of the very few places on Earth to see them. Trekking through the swaying bamboo with a ranger, you follow a habituated troop and watch these agile, playful monkeys leaping, feeding and chattering among the stems, often at close range, a joyful and photogenic encounter quite different from the gorillas. Their beauty and energy are enchanting.
  • The surreal, otherworldly landscapes and unique flora of the Rwenzori are a wonder of this adventure. Few mountains on Earth look like the Rwenzori. As you climb, the vegetation shifts through dramatic zones, from dripping, moss-hung montane forest and dense bamboo to a strange, dreamlike alpine world found only on Africa's high equatorial peaks, where giant lobelias stand like sentinels, tree groundsels tower overhead, everlasting flowers glow, and mosses drape everything in an eerie green. Waterfalls tumble, mist drifts through valleys, and glaciers gleam above. Hiking through this bizarre, beautiful, primeval landscape feels like walking through another world. The strangeness and beauty are captivating.
  • The dramatic scenery of the Virunga volcanoes and the warmth of the highland people enrich this journey. The far southwest of Uganda, where Mgahinga sits, is a land of soaring volcanic cones, terraced hillsides, crater lakes and small farming villages, one of the most beautiful and dramatic corners of Africa. Between treks you take in sweeping views of the three volcanoes, walk or drive through a landscape of ribboned terraces and busy villages, and meet the welcoming highland people, including the Batwa, the forest's original inhabitants, whose guided cultural walks share the traditions, plants and stories of the mountains. The scenery and human warmth are captivating.
  • Above all, this journey unites two of Uganda's greatest wild adventures, the Rwenzori and the Virunga gorillas, for the intrepid traveller. For the mountain lover and the adventurer who wants more than a standard safari, this nine-day itinerary is exceptional, pairing the epic, glacier-capped trekking of the Rwenzori, the Mountains of the Moon, with the profound encounter with gorillas and golden monkeys in the volcanic Virungas at Mgahinga. Guided by expert mountain crews and trackers and warmed by Ugandan hospitality, it is rugged, remote and spectacular, taking you deep into the wild highlands that few travellers ever see. The combination of high adventure and rare primates is unmatched.

Good to Know
  • Visa & entry: Most nationalities need a visa for Uganda, easily obtained as an eVisa online before travel; an East Africa Tourist Visa is also available if you are combining Uganda with Kenya and Rwanda. A passport valid for at least six months with blank pages is required, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry. We confirm the exact process for your nationality and help arrange the eVisa where needed
  • Currency: The currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX); US dollars are widely accepted for tourism, park fees and tips (bring clean, newer notes dated 2013 or later). Cards are accepted in Kampala, Entebbe and larger lodges, but carry cash for markets, craft stalls, tips and rural areas. ATMs are available in Kampala, Entebbe and major towns
  • Best time to visit: Uganda is a year-round destination, but the two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, are ideal for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking and game drives, with easier forest trails and better wildlife viewing. The wetter months (March to May and October to November) are lush, green and quieter, with fruiting forests that can bring primates lower and closer
  • Language & etiquette: English is the official language and is widely spoken, alongside Luganda, Swahili and many local languages; a few words of greeting are always warmly received. Ugandans are famously friendly, warm and welcoming. Dress is casual but modest, especially in villages and towns, and it is polite to ask before photographing people
  • Getting around: Touring is by private 4x4 safari vehicle with your own expert driver-guide, with some long but scenic drives on a mix of tarmac and rougher park roads; scenic domestic light-aircraft flights to airstrips near Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls can shorten long transfers and are easily arranged. Roads can be slow, so we plan realistic days
  • Health & trekking: A yellow fever certificate is required, and antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended, as is comprehensive travel insurance. Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking involve hiking on steep, sometimes muddy forest trails at altitude, so reasonable fitness, sturdy waterproof boots, gaiters, a rain jacket and gardening-style gloves are advised. Porters are available and warmly recommended to support local communities
  • Permits & wildlife rules: Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking require permits that are strictly limited and must be booked well in advance; we secure these for you as part of your journey. On a trek you spend a magical, closely regulated hour with the primates, keeping a respectful distance, wearing a mask where required, and following your ranger's guidance at all times. There is a minimum age of 15 for gorilla trekking
  • Safety & power: Uganda, the warm and welcoming Pearl of Africa, is a rewarding and generally safe destination for travellers, and we use trusted guides and lodges and follow official guidance at all times. Power is 240V with UK-style type G three-pin plugs, so bring an adapter; lodges in remote areas may run on generators or solar with limited charging hours, so a power bank is useful
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is the Rwenzori trek and how fit do I need to be?

The Rwenzori trek is a genuine mountain expedition and is challenging, involving several days of hiking at altitude over steep, muddy, boggy and rocky terrain in a wet, cold, high-mountain environment. A good level of fitness, some prior hiking experience and proper cold-weather and waterproof gear are important, and you should be prepared for demanding days. That said, you go at your own pace with an expert crew and porters, and the route can be tailored to your fitness and ambitions, from shorter scenic treks to higher, tougher itineraries. We advise honestly on the best option for you.

How is Mgahinga different from gorilla trekking in Bwindi?

Mgahinga offers a wilder, quieter and more dramatic gorilla experience than Bwindi. Set among the three great Virunga volcanoes in Uganda's far southwest, it is far less visited, and treks pass through bamboo and montane forest on the volcanic slopes, framed by soaring peaks shared with Rwanda and Congo. Mgahinga is also the only place in Uganda to track the rare golden monkeys. Bwindi has more habituated gorilla families and higher availability of permits, while Mgahinga rewards the adventurous with remoteness, spectacular scenery and two special primate encounters in one park.

What meals are included?

Daily breakfast is included, along with any meals named in the itinerary; at remote safari lodges and forest camps most stays are full board, so lunches and dinners are typically included there, while in Entebbe, Kampala and towns we often leave some meals free for you to explore. Ugandan food is fresh and hearty, from grilled tilapia and Nile perch to matoke, groundnut stews, tropical fruit and excellent local coffee, and we recommend the best places to eat at every stage.

Are the tours private or in a group?

Your journey is private by default, with your own expert English-speaking driver-guide and private 4x4 safari vehicle, giving you flexibility, depth and a pace tailored to you; small-group and lodge-based options can be arranged if you prefer. Uganda's knowledgeable guides and forest rangers bring the gorillas, chimpanzees, savanna wildlife, birds and rich culture vividly to life, and the private vehicle means you can linger at every sighting.

Do I need a visa for Uganda?

Most nationalities need a visa, easily obtained as an eVisa online before travel, while an East Africa Tourist Visa is available if you are combining Uganda with Kenya and Rwanda. We confirm the exact, current requirements for your nationality, advise on the best option, and help arrange the eVisa where needed. A passport valid for at least six months and a yellow fever vaccination certificate are required for entry.

Is Uganda safe to visit?

Uganda, warmly known as the Pearl of Africa, is a friendly and generally safe destination for travellers, renowned for the warmth and hospitality of its people, and travel here is rewarding and smooth. We continuously monitor conditions, use trusted local guides, rangers and lodges, and follow official guidance at all times. As anywhere, we advise sensible precautions with valuables, and your driver-guide is with you throughout to ensure a safe and relaxed journey.

When is the best time to visit?

Uganda is a year-round destination, but the two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, are generally best for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking and game drives, with easier forest trails. The wetter months are lush, green, quieter and beautiful, and fruiting forests can bring primates closer, so they have their own rewards. We advise on the best timing for your interests, whether primates, big game, birding or scenery.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. We can adjust the balance of gorillas, chimpanzees, savanna safari, the Nile, mountains and lakes, add nights at Bwindi, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Lake Bunyonyi or Jinja, include a second gorilla trek or a Rwenzori climb, extend with Rwanda or Kenya, and tailor the pace, comfort and focus to you. Every itinerary is a flexible starting point for your ideal journey through the Pearl of Africa.
